Heritage Interpretive Classroom

LUNENBURG ACADEMY FOUNDATION'S

Our Mission:

The care, preservation, and restoration of this National Historic Site.

Given the Lunenburg Academy operated as a public school (Grade Primary to Grade 12) from 1895 to 1965, and then from 1966 to 2012 (Grade Primary to Grade 5), the new Heritage Interpretive Classroom tells the important story of the many contributions of the Academy, both to the local community as well as to the provincial education system. This permanent instalment will be maintained for future generations to learn of the evolution of education through 117 years of the Academy’s operation. There is no other Academy or classroom in existence in the province today that will allow visitors, students and academic researchers to learn from the teaching methods of the day. In addition to the academic curriculum, other extra curricular activities and customs will be on full display at this site along with experiential programming for all ages. Please join us for a once in a lifetime opportunity to gift our National Historic treasure to future generations.

History:

As an iconic landmark in the Town of Lunenburg, the Lunenburg Academy was designed by New Brunswick architect H.H. Mott in 1893 in a time of transition from one-room schoolhouses to public educational buildings. Known as “the Castle on the Hill”, and sitting atop Gallows Hill, It remains the only surviving intact 19th century Academy building in Nova Scotia and one of very few in Canada.

The Academy is a designated a National Historic Site, located in a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The Heritage Interpretive Classroom will tell the story of how this educational institute contributed to social progress, civil improvement, and humanitarianism. Lunenburg Academy was a place for the development of not only its pupils but also the community. Its leadership brought people together, shaped community values, inspired pride, and fostered participation in town life. Uniting the town and county beyond, the school connected citizens near and far in ways they had never been before and became a cornerstone in the development of Lunenburg that remains to this day.
