Lunenburg Academy Foundation Announces Restoration Project
“Saved by the Bell? Now It’s Your Turn”

The Lunenburg Academy Foundation is pleased to have been presented with the Heritage Recognition Award by the Town of Lunenburg.

The Lunenburg Academy was nominated to receive this important recognition for the extensive preservation and restoration work to the outside of the Lunenburg Academy building that was completed in March 2021.

The Lunenburg Academy, built between 1893 – 1895, is a massive, three storey Victorian building located atop Gallows Hill in the center of Lunenburg. The ornate Academy building is a registered Municipal and Provincial Heritage Property, and as of 1983, a National Historic Site, owned by the Town.

The Lunenburg Academy Foundation, since its inception in 1981, has dedicated itself to the care, preservation and restoration of the building. Comprised of former staff, alumni and interested citizens, the Foundation works closely with the Town of Lunenburg to ensure the future of the Lunenburg Academy.

The award was presented to the Lunenburg Academy Foundation Board Members and Alumni; Roxanna Smith and Jane Ritcey-Moore, by Mayor Risser and Town Heritage Manager, Arthur MacDonald on May 26, 2021.

The Lunenburg Academy Foundation is grateful to be the recipient of this award in recognition of the restoration work to our beloved Heritage Academy building. Thank you to the Town of Lunenburg!

Lunenburg Academy Lot Development Plan

The Town has embarked on the development of a proposed Lot Development Plan for the Lunenburg Academy. The Plan envisions a large plaza area in front (eastern side of the building) with walkways, pedestrian amenities such as benches and lighting, vegetation and facilities to accommodate a future outdoor café area. The south side of the building will accommodate a new parking lot consisting of 62 parking spaces with designated handicapped parking adjacent to the building. The parking area will be surrounded with vegetation, and surface run-off will be filtered through a bio-swale along the western edge of the parking area. Walking trails will be developed around the Academy site with connections to the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Dear Members of the Lunenburg Academy Foundation:

Given the very latest government regulations regarding COVID-19 coronavirus, which continues to place paramount importance on the health and safety of everyone, the Lunenburg Academy Foundation will not hold the Annual General Meeting (the AGM) on its scheduled date.

The AGM was scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 23, 2020 . The AGM is an important event in our annual calendar and we want all our Members to feel able to attend in safety. To that end, the meeting will be arranged for a future date when there is no longer a public health risk. We will advise all Members accordingly.

Many thanks for your continued dedication to the Lunenburg Academy Foundation, and best wishes for everyone’s health and safety.

LUNENBURG ACADEMY CAFÉ

The Town of Lunenburg is accepting Expressions of Interest from potential café operators to operate a café at the Lunenburg Academy, 97 Kaulbach Street, Lunenburg, N.S.

The objective of this Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEOI) is to facilitate Parties to express their interest in leasing the space allocated for the café (Room 101 of the Lunenburg Academy) and being the owner and operator of the café business. The successful applicant will operate the café under a Lease Agreement with the Town of Lunenburg.

Interested parties are encouraged to submit their Expressions of Interest Submissions to the Town by no later than 2:00 p.m. June 14, 2019 to be accepted. Those submissions received after said time will be returned to the submitter.

The Town reserves the right to accept or refuse any Expressions of Interest as, in its sole discretion, deems fit in keeping with the Request for Expressions of Interest terms and conditions.

(LUNENBURG, NS – November 28, 2017) The Lunenburg Academy Foundation is pleased to announce that new Directors were elected to the Board at its Extraordinary General Meeting held on September 20, 2017. The new board members are Melanie Comstock, Graham Eisenhauer, John Harker, Tom Hayes, and Allan Richards.

Past Presidents Roxanna Smith and Jane Ritcey were re-elected, as was Councillor Ronnie Bachman, the Town of Lunenburg appointed representative.

Short biographies of the Board Members.

Retiring Board Members were warmly commended for all of the time, effort and contributions put forth during their terms. Many will continue to work on behalf of the Lunenburg Academy Alumni. The Foundation particularly wishes to thank David Afford, Terry Conrad, Hugh Corkum, Rita Glen, Nancy Haughn, Brian Jobb, Roberta MacDonald, Roberta McNab, Jill Martin, Lisa Wright, and Robert Young.

At the first meeting of the new Board, held on October 16, 2017, John Harker was elected President, Melanie Comstock Vice President, and Graham Eisenhauer Secretary/Treasurer. Board renewal and rejuvenation has been undertaken in advance of the Foundation working with the Town of Lunenburg to explore an expanded role in the management of the building.

Scott Burke, currently serving as the Lunenburg Academy Development Coordinator on behalf of the Town of Lunenburg, has been engaged by the Foundation as its Interim Executive Director.

Over the next six months the Board will be exploring potential areas of operations at the Academy it may take over in collaboration with the Town, the owner of this National, Provincial and Municipal Heritage Site.

“These are exciting times for the Foundation,” said Past President Roxanna Smith, “Since 1981 the Foundation has taken seriously the care, preservation and restoration of our iconic ‘Castle on the Hill’ as the Academy has affectionately come to be known. So many people have assisted us in our mission over the years, and it is gratifying to celebrate their achievements while passing the torch to a new generation.”

Since the implementation of the Academy’s Future Use Business Plan in 2015 a great deal of work has been done to the facility as it transitions from a public school to a vibrant Community Cultural Centre. Over $1.5 million in tenant readiness renovations took place in 2015/2016, funded jointly by Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency (ACOA), the Town of Lunenburg and the Lunenburg Academy Foundation.

Currently interior renovations are underway to create a state of the art library space in anticipation of the Lunenburg Branch of the South Shore Public Library relocation in 2018. In addition, a $2 million Exterior Restoration is taking place including paint removal, repairs to windows, wooden architectural features and cladding. Parks Canada, the Province of Nova Scotia, The Town of Lunenburg, and the Lunenburg Academy Foundation jointly fund this latter project. A landscape and parking improvement plan is in development.

Tenants of the Lunenburg Academy include the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance (LAMP), Class Afloat West Island College International, South Shore Genealogical Society, Sculptor Chippie Kennedy, and Craig Munroe Financial Management. A Heritage Interpretive Classroom and further development of space on the first floor are in the works.

“Newly recruited Board members bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the contemplated expanded role of the Foundation,” said John Harker, incoming President, “It’s an honour for us all to work with Roxie, Jane, and others in support of a priceless community asset that is so deserving of national attention.”

The Lunenburg Academy is a key landmark in the town of Lunenburg and one of the most remarkable heritage buildings in the Province. Well-known New Brunswick architect H.H. Mott designed the Academy in 1893. The building was completed in 1895, and opened for class on November 7, 1895. It was constructed as part of Nova Scotia’s shift from one-room schoolhouses to public academies and operated continuously as a public educational building from 1895 until 2012. The Lunenburg Academy is the only surviving intact 19th century Academy building in Nova Scotia.

Additional supporting footings, necessary to meet specifications to carry the load of heavy books, are almost complete. Keeping the past alive

Keeping the past alive. A big thank you goes out to those hard working Board members and alumni who have managed to collect one set of Seagull yearbooks in the collection from 1935-2010. We are missing a copy of the 1998 Seagull. The inventory covers publication from 1935-1966 at the Lunenburg Academy and 1967-2010 at the Lunenburg Jr Sr High School. These books from the first slim paper editions to the recognizable coloured cover picturing a seagull soaring across the page serve as time capsules of an era long passed. They include proof of the generous support of Lunenburg businesses decade after decade. They showcase the creative exploits of students in prose, poetry as well as journalism. The books capture young people participating in the many clubs and organizations which ran year after year at the Lunenburg Academy: Red Cross, Choral Club, curling, basketball, band, drill teams just to name a few. Their time at the iconic Academy captured in class pictures, the faces of the students in each grade smile back at their reader.

The McKee Challenge: The Foundation is thrilled to announce that the McKee 10,000 challenge, advertised in the recent Scribbler newsletter was an overwhelming success. Thank you to Ian and Johanne Zwicker McKee (1950) for sponsoring this challenge. We hit the 10,000 mark by late December and the McKee’s matched that amount. Funding Announcement

On February 12, 2015 the Town of Lunenburg was pleased to announce funding grants from ACOA (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) to help with the repurposing of Lunenburg Academy.

Interior renovations include new washrooms and electrical and plumbing upgrades, a wheelchair accessible ramp and conversion of interior spaces into offices to make the heritage building more rental-friendly. Mayor Bailey hopes the timely acquisition of funds will result in the school becoming a “revenue-generating multi-purpose facility.”Gerald Keddy, MP for South Shore-St Margaret’s was on hand to share the good news. The 750,000 total is comprised of 420,000 from ACOA; 180,000 from the Town of Lunenburg; and 150,000 from the Lunenburg Academy Foundation.
